In Jurgen Klopp's last season, there was still a belief that Nunez could blossom into the striker to lead the team forward in its next guise, but that prospect looks more distant than ever.
And for a player whose role is now to impact proceedings from the bench, he has not done it often enough.
Accepting that Nunez will not be the long-term solution as the marquee striker, how might he be able to maximize his impact in a red jersey?
Fowler believes that Nunez has what it takes to fulfil the Divock Origi role.
The Belgian was renowned for popping up at the biggest times, playing an outsized part in Liverpool's 2019 Champions League triumph.
“Darwin Nunez could be the next Divock Origi when it comes to scoring big goals at big moments," said Fowler.
For one thing, it requires fully relinquishing the idea that Nunez could ever genuinely justfiy his potential or his price tag — Origi, for all his brilliance, was a bit-part player, and did not play a role befitting a $107m (£85m) arrival.
In other words, if Nunez does manage to make that role his own, his signing will still have been a failure
But it might make the best of a bad job.
Yet there are also question marks over whether Nunez is even up to fulfilling the Origi role
But even if it is only between now and the end of the season, Nunez has the chance to do some significant repairs to his Anfield reputation — a couple more "Origi moments" like the one against Brentford, and his name could be forever associated with a Premier League title.
