Liverpool icon Roberto Firmino has appeared to take a swipe at Al-Ahli on Instagram today.
His career in Saudi Arabia has taken an unexpected turn as he finds himself unregistered from Al-Ahli’s squad for the remainder of the Saudi Pro League season.
It comes then as a surprise for the Brazilian forward, who joined Al-Ahli in 2023, as he has managed nine goals and five assists in 25 appearances this season.
The decision to drop Firmino from the squad comes as a result of the Saudi Pro League’s strict rule limiting teams to 10 foreign players.
Al-Ahli’s recent signing of Wenderson Galeno from Porto for a reported £42 million left the club with 11 foreign players, forcing them to make a difficult choice.
Head coach Matthias Jaissle opted to exclude Firmino, explaining, “It was a difficult decision for the club and based on the rules.
He’s still one of our leaders.”
Despite being unregistered for domestic matches, Firmino remains eligible to play in the AFC Champions League?
The 33-year-old recently showcased his quality by scoring an impressive bicycle kick in a 3-1 victory just days before the decision was made.
While Firmino’s contract with Al-Ahli runs until 2026, his omission from the league squad has sparked speculation about an early departure.
And it seems the Brazilian himself has not taken to the decision too lightly either.
Roberto Firmino makes cryptic post alluding to Al-Ahli
Taking to Instagram, the Brazilian has posted a video sharing anticipation for Al-Ahli’s upcoming AFC Champions League match against Al-Gharafa.
Of course, this is a fixture he’s eligible for having only been excluded from the league squad.
He opted to post a bible verse that speaks about how to deal with negativity from other people, with the translated message reading:
“10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
“11 Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.”
“12 Rejoice and be glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
The 33-year-old recently showcased his quality by scoring an impressive bicycle kick in a 3-1 victory just days before the decision was made.
While on its own is a stretch to think its a dig at his employers, he last week also posted a similar sound messaging last week:
The coming weeks will likely provide more clarity on the future of the talented forward, who has proven his worth at the highest levels of European football.
For now, we are sending strength to Bobby as he navigates an uncertain time in his illustrious career.
