Roy Keane has admitted that he would put Mohamed Salah in the mix of the world's best footballers at present, despite earlier doubts of his capabilities.

And Keane isn't the only player-turned-pundit who had their doubts about Salah over the last couple of seasons, with Liverpool legend Carragher also citing concerns when he returned to club football after the African Cup of Nations last January.

Carragher explained: "He went to the African Cup of Nations last season, come back and he wasn't the same player – and it was the first time you could ever go, 'oooh'.

He was injured, wasn't fully fit, and it was a case of Liverpool turned down I think probably about £120million, £150million the season before for him, when the Saudi thing first kicked off.

"And it was, 'okay, can we still get that money a year later', but he ended up staying and I think the version of Mo Salah now is much better than even his first season, which I think he got 47 goals...

But this is a complete package now rather than just a goalscorer."

Salah missed 12 games in total for Liverpool through muscular injury across 2023/24, however, the 32-year-old has been unplayable in the current term.

While he failed to score in Liverpool's 2-0 dismantling of Newcastle United at Anfield on Wednesday night, Salah proved his worth once more by setting up Alexis Mac Allister's goal 63 minutes in.

He received the ball inside the box from Mac Allister, before displaying fast footwork to deceive Lewis Hall and Dan Burn and squaring the ball back to his team-mate, who tucked it past Nick Pope and into the left-hand side of the goal.

Salah has also thrived in Europe this term, scoring thrice and securing a quartet of assists in the Champions League to help Liverpool to a first-place finish in the league standings.

They will now face PSG in the round of 16 of the competition in March.

However, Salah's time at Anfield could soon come to an end, as his current contract expires in the forthcoming summer transfer window and he is yet to agree a new deal.

Speaking with Steve McManaman for TNT Sports on Wednesday, Salah shook his head with a wry smile when asked if there was any advancements on a new contract, before adding: "In a very polite way."

Meanwhile, Reds boss Arne Slot has expressed his desire to keep a hold of the star for the 2025/26 campaign.

He explained: "Mo has had some outstanding seasons here at Liverpool, and we hope he can continue this for a longer period of time.
