Roy Keane inadvertently made himself and Manchester United look silly by saying Liverpool would be a "laughing stock" if they fail to win the Premier League this season.

And Arne Slot’s side losing their grip on the title at this point would be embarrassing, at least according to United icon Keane.

During his post-match analysis on Sky Sports after Liverpool's win over City, pundit Keane urged Slot’s men to keep their focus despite their comfortable position, saying: “It’s more exciting for the neutral when it’s a bit tight but when you’re in the dressing room and you’re that much clear, it’s fantastic.



You look at the players getting interviewed afterwards and they are probably lowkey about it but in the dressing room you know what a big result this is."

Keane appeared to forget the fact that he once led a United team that squandered a 13-point lead in the title race.

During the 1997/98 Premier League season, United had established a significant lead over rivals Arsenal by December, owing to the Gunners' poor form from mid-October onwards.

However, Arsene Wenger's team embarked on an impressive run after Christmas, remaining unbeaten until their final two games of the season.

In contrast, United endured a difficult period after Boxing Day, although they were still 12 points ahead as late as February - the same stage Liverpool are at in the current season.

A decisive defeat to Arsenal at Old Trafford in March played a significant role in the trophy being snatched away from them by a single point at the end of the season.

Yet the humiliation of that campaign was so great that Ferguson briefly resigned as manager.

At-the-time Red Devils chairman Martin Edwards had a brutally honest conversation with the Scotsman in the aftermath of the collapse that summer, a talk that went so badly Ferguson offered his resignation, before quickly retracting it and going on to secure a historic Treble the following season.
