Former Liverpool man Ryan Babel believes there is a world where Trent Alexander-Arnold remains at Anfield after all.
Liverpool’s Premier League title charge has been overshadowed by mounting certainty over Trent Alexander-Arnold’s impending departure to Real Madrid, with transfer experts Fabrizio Romano and David Ornstein asserting the deal is in its final stages.
Speaking as recently as Thursday, Romano said:
“What I can tell you on Trent.
The situation is exactly the same between Trent, Liverpool and Real Madrid.”
“The deal is at the final stages, just waiting for formal steps and to sign all the contracts, just waiting to complete all the documents… and that’s the direction of the story.”
“At the moment, no changes in the conversation or situation at Liverpool.”
“Then we follow the story until the end and wait for him to sign the contract.”
Despite the Reds’ imminent domestic triumph, the 26-year-old right-back appears destined for the Santiago Bernabéu as a free agent this summer, ending his 18-year association with his boyhood club.
Alexander-Arnold’s exit would conclude a glittering Anfield career featuring six major trophies, including a likely 2024/25 Premier League medal.
But Ryan Babel is not so sure, and believes that things in football can change very quickly if nothing is officially signed:
“As long as nothing is signed, things can still be influenced.
I’ve seen crazy things in football, so everything is possible,” Babel said via GOAL.
“At the same time, I think, and I understand from a Liverpool fan perspective, that they are disappointed and would love to see Trent extend longer with the club.”
“Obviously, local boy, so it’s even maybe more sensitive.
And if you look back, I think he gave everything for the club.”
“He has won many things for the club already.”
Babel added that Reds fans should nevertheless give him a good send-off even if he is a local player wanting to move on:
“Sometimes as an individual, regardless if you are from that city, you have aspirations, you have dreams, and your career is only short.
And if his heart desires to try and be successful, outside of Liverpool, we should wish him well.”
Alexander-Arnold’s celebration against Leicester City was certainly strong for someone who is supposed to be leaving in a few weeks.
Should Liverpool avoid defeat against Tottenham on Sunday, it would confirm a title win at Anfield – a stage for Alexander-Arnold’s potential farewell.
