Ryan Gravenberch’s evolution at Liverpool has been one of the defining narratives of the 2024/25 Premier League season.
After a debut campaign under Jürgen Klopp that yielded just 12 league starts and 1,839 minutes across all competitions, the Dutch midfielder has become indispensable under Arne Slot, starting all 33 Premier League matches and anchoring Liverpool’s title charge.
Klopp deployed Gravenberch primarily as a box-to-box midfielder, but the 22-year-old often struggled for consistency.
Slot’s arrival catalyzed a positional shift to a deeper-lying No.
Beyond tactics, Gravenberch attributes his surge to improved self-care: “I’m taking better care of myself in terms of recovery and diet,” he acknowledged, addressing last season’s criticism about fluctuating fitness levels
Under Slot’s staff – including performance coach Ruben Peeters – most Liverpool players have not had too much worries with injuries this term.
But starting all 33 Premier League games will surely take its toll, and Gravenberch acknowledged it has been tough on his body – which suggests the club really do need to buy a trustworthy back-up in the summer:
“Still going strong!” the 22-year-old said to liverpoolfc.com
“To be honest, it’s really tough as well.”
“Last season I didn’t play a lot and now I play almost every game
It’s tough but I still keep going.”
“In the beginning of the season I had to adapt to the new role, to the new position
The manager fully trusted me there, so I’m really happy with that.”
The Dutchman added on the return of Trent Alexander-Arnold:
“I’m really happy for him
Also today, you see we really need them.”
