Liverpool fans are used to big names at the back.
From Virgil van Dijk to Ibrahima Konate, the club has made a habit of going for strong, athletic defenders who can thrive in high-pressure games.
But the future is never certain.
With reports linking Konate to a possible move away this summer and uncertainty around van Dijk’s contract, the Reds are now reportedly exploring backup options.
The focus isn’t just on big names or flashy talents.
It’s about finding someone with the right profile.
A defender who can handle the Premier League’s physical demands.
Someone who doesn’t shy away from duels, knows how to hold the line, and can adapt quickly.
Liverpool are not alone in this search, either.
Other top clubs in England and Italy are scouting the same targets, which shows how competitive the transfer market has become.
Who is the SC Braga defender being watched by Liverpool?
According to Africafoot, Liverpool are “very interested” in Sikou Niakate, the 25-year-old central defender from SC Braga.
The Malian international has impressed over the past two seasons in Portugal’s Primeira Liga.
Liverpool scouts have reportedly watched him multiple times, and he is said to have “a profile that perfectly matches the British kick and rush.”
This isn’t the first time top clubs have been linked with Niakate.
Manchester United and Manchester City were reportedly eyeing him during the last winter window.
West Ham and Galatasaray also showed interest, but Braga set a firm release clause of €30 million, which put some clubs off.
Bologna were close to signing him last summer, but the move didn’t happen.
Niakate is under contract at Braga until June 30, 2028.
In that time, he’s made 97 appearances, scored 8 goals, and provided 1 assist.
Whether Liverpool is ready to meet the €30 million asking price remains to be seen.
But what’s clear is that Niakate has made his way onto the Reds’ shortlist.
