By now, most Liverpool fans are bored hearing about Virgil van Dijk and his contract situation at the club – especially if the Saudi Pro League are also mentioned.
Van Dijk’s existing contract expires in June 2025, and while Liverpool tabled an offer, talks have stalled over financial terms and the club’s long-term planning.
The Reds’ hierarchy is wary of committing significant wages to a player who turns 34 in July, despite Van Dijk’s imperious form this campaign.
His 28 Premier League appearances have yielded eight clean sheets, 87% pass accuracy, and a league-best 4.3 aerial duels won per game.
The Van Dijk negotiations form part of a broader contract puzzle at Anfield.
Both Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold have also received formal offers, though the proposals reportedly fell short of expectations.
Alexander-Arnold’s situation adds another layer of complexity, with Real Madrid showing interest in Liverpool’s vice-captain.
The negotiations must balance Liverpool’s wage structure, where Salah currently leads with £350,000 weekly, followed by Van Dijk at £220,000 and Alexander-Arnold at approximately £180,000 per week.
Despite some uncertainty, it seems that Van Dijk will certainly not be heading to the Saudi Pro League if the latest reports are to be believed.
Instead, Saudi Arabia outlet 365scores has released an exclusive story asserting they have spoken to an official source in the Saudi Roshn League – and with the league seemingly giving up on signing the Dutchman:
“Van Dijk rejected all offers made to him by the Saudi league in the last period,” said the Saudi official.
“We learned from those close to Van Dijk that his first desire is to continue in Europe after the end of his contract with Liverpool, so the idea of him coming has been ruled out now but all possibilities remain.”
Additionally, widespread reports have all maintained that Van Dijk is the most likely out of the three to extend terms at Anfield.
Speaking on the Walk On Podcast last week, the Athletic’s James Pearce said:
“I’m still confident that Van Dijk will stay put?
I think he’s been by far and away the best centre-half in European football this season,” he explained.
“It’s not only what he gives you on the pitch but he is that ideal role model, leader, talisman in terms of the way he conducts himself off the pitch as well.”
