Liverpool are closing in on a 20th league title, cementing their place as one of the biggest clubs in English football history.

The Reds suffered only their second defeat of the season the last time they were in Premier League action, but with Arsenal’s 1-1 to Brentford yesterday, Liverpool now just need three more wins to be crowned Premier League champions.

The last time Liverpool found themselves carved onto that infamous trophy was 2020, a season interrupted by Coronavirus.

Unprecedented events followed the announcement that there would be a nationwide lockdown due to the virus, halting all sporting activities for months.

Liverpool played on the 7th March 2020, as they looked to secure the title in record time, but they then didn’t play again until 21st June 2020, as they walked out to an empty Goodison Park to play out a goalless Merseyside Derby.

Fans weren’t allowed into any game for the remainder of the season, and as the Liverpool players lifted the Premier League title, they looked out on to an empty Anfield, wishing it was bustling with noise from passionate supporters but it was not.

As the current Premier League season reaches its conclusion, Alexis Mac Allister recently explained how the senior players in the team are now desperately hoping to win a title in front of their own fans, and for an open-top bus parade to celebrate it in the city.

Speaking to Telemundo Deportes, Mac Allister said: “We have talked about it with players who have been in the team for longer and lived that.

When Argentina won the World Cup, the best part was going back home with the trophy to celebrate with the fans.”

“We hope to do the same with Liverpool fans.

There are so many difficult games ahead, so we need to keep working.”

If Liverpool were to win their next three games they will have to beat West Ham, Leicester and Spurs.

The senior members in the squad will be looking to go one step closer to making that a reality with a win against West Ham this afternoon.
