Carabao Cup holders Liverpool will look to advance to the last four of the tournament when they travel to St.
Mary’s Stadium to face Southampton.
The Reds are the record holders of this competition, having won it on ten occasions, including twice in the last three seasons.
This season, they have already beaten West Ham (5-1) and Brighton (3-2) on their way to this round.
Although it has been a challenging few days for Liverpool, who have seen their lead at the top of the Premier League table cut to two points, albeit with a game in hand, the Reds come into this tie as the overwhelming favourites.
Arne Slot’side are unbeaten in 19 games (W16, D3), last tasting defeat in a narrow 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest in mid-September.
However, this fixture could be a real banana skin for the Premier League leaders.
Things are not helped by the fact that Slot will miss this game after getting his third booking of the season in Liverpool’s draw with Fulham over the weekend.
But the Reds have already emerged victorious from the south coast in this competition, overcoming Brighton 3-2 in the last round.
And if the history of the EFL Cup is anything to go by, Liverpool are likely to go all the way again as the defending champions boast a return of 12 wins in their last 14 games against the Saints (D1, L1).
The Liverpool team will be looking to make it 13 wins in 15 head-to-head games against Southampton as well as reaching other milestones in this game.
Pre-match stats and records Liverpool can reach for against Southampton
With Connor Bradley out with an injury, Trent Alexander-Arnold could start at right back against the Saints.
The Dutchman is the joint-topscorer in the Carabao Cup this season, having scored four times in two of Liverpool’s games thus far.
That return of four goals in two matches means that Gakpo has scored eight times in his last eight games in this competition.
Liverpool’s longest-serving player, Joe Gomez, has made more appearances (17) than any other current Reds player in the League Cup.
Although Mohamed Salah is unlikely to start this game, the Egyptian is still in line for a Liverpool record against the Saints.
With 227 Liverpool goals in all competitions, Salah is one goal away from joining Billy Liddell in joint-fourth place on the club’s all-time top scorers list.
The Egyptian has netted nine times in 12 previous outings for the Reds against Southampton, including two in Liverpool’s 3-2 win at St Mary’s last month.
Two Liverpool players, Wataru Endo and Jarell Quansah, are walking a suspension tight-rope ahead of this game?
Either player would miss the first leg of the semi-finals if they receive a yellow card in this match and Liverpool go through to the next round.
Meanwhile, Southampton are the only team ever to beat Liverpool in both legs of a semi-final, doing so without conceding in the 2016-17 League Cup.
The Saints were also the first team ever to knock the Reds out of the League Cup – winning 2-1 at Anfield in November 1960.
