Steven Gerrard has dropped a major update on his next move in management as talk over a Rangers return refuses to go away.

The former Ibrox boss was a fans' favourite in his first spell and ended the Light Blues' long wait for a Scottish Premiership title success while killing Celtic's hopes of a historic 10-in-a row triumph in the process.

His work in Govan earned him a shot at the English Premier League with Aston Villa but that was a short-lived stint before he moved to Saudi with Al-Ettifaq but that journey came to an end after 18 months at the helm.

Gerrard is now out of work and has been named and tipped by numerous ex-players and pundits as one the 49ers takeover could look to bring on board once a deal is over the line.

Barry Ferguson is currently in charge on an interim basis until the summer and has impressed with victory over Brendan Rodgers and Celtic in their own backyard while he masterminded a success over Jose Mourinho and Fenerbahce to book a Europa League quarter-final spot.

But whether or not he gets the keys full time remains up in the air.

Gerrard insists he's not ready to return to management at this time - but with the next permanent Rangers manager to be decided in the summer, his timeline could align with the club vision.

Speaking on That Peter Crouch Podcast, he said: "I don't want to be back in work mate.

Not at the moment.

"I've just come out, so I'm happy with waking up and being free, doing the family stuff.

I'm just being free, away from stress and all that.

"I will go back in at some point, but when it's around the clock, which I've been doing the last 18-19 months in terms of the last job , I just want to be free, I just want to have a game of golf, go down the boozer and have a couple of beers.

"I want to do normal things that you can't really do when you're coaching, so I am all good.

"I'm good and stress free.

I’m out of work in terms of the coaching and management, which is obviously 24/7.
