Sunderland manager Régis Le Bris has delivered very disappointing news regarding the fitness of Liverpool loanee Jayden Danns.
Danns was seen as a hot prospect when he joined the Black Cats on loan from Liverpool in January.
With his reputation growing after a standout FA Cup performance, fans had high hopes for the young striker.
Sunderland’s excitement was palpable when they secured the loan deal, believing Danns would be a key addition to their squad.
However, things have not gone as expected.
Danns arrived at Sunderland with an underlying back injury, which was flagged up during his medical.
Despite this, Sunderland went ahead with the deal, hoping that he could recover and contribute to the team’s promotion bid.
The forward has struggled to make an impact at Sunderland, and the Black Cats manager, Le Bris, has confirmed that he will finish his loan at Sunderland without ever having played for the club.
The injury will rule him out for the remainder of the season.
“He won’t play with us this season, it is definitive now,” Le Bris said in a press conference.
With Sunderland set to feature in the playoffs, there had been distant hope of a late (and potentially dramatic) cameo for Danns?
But Regis Le Bris has dashed even those dreams, ruling the Liverpool forward out of playing any part in the campaign.
The 19-year-old has probably hardly even set foot in Sunderland, having been based out of Liverpool for his recuperation.
What looked like a great opportunity to get exposure to senior football and test his level has come to absolutely nothing, no doubt realizing his worst fears when the injury was picked up.
Recently, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, described the whole ordeal as a “disappointment” for both parties.
He said, “I think he would’ve been a real good addition to that side, they’ve got some very good young players and he would’ve fitted in nicely.”
However, Hendrie went on to explain that Danns’ loan move was always a gamble.
He added, “Anyone going there unfit, struggling with little niggles, is always a gamble and it hasn’t paid off unfortunately.”
