'Taking that position': Arne Slot suggests Liverpool youngster has been promoted after confirming new injury

Liverpool are looking in good shape as they head into another busy period of the season.

The Reds have been managing expertly with injuries over recent weeks and had all but one player available for Thursday night’s win over Tottenham.

Trent Alexander-Arnold missed the game with a knock and Arne Slot confirmed during his pre-match press conference that the right-back will not be ready for Sunday’s game with Plymouth Argyle.

The hope remains that Alexander-Arnold will be fine to play a part for Liverpool in Wednesday’s Merseyside Derby.

In the meantime, Slot also gave a wider injury assessment on where the Liverpool squad are currently at.

Unfortunately, there is some bad news for Tyler Morton, who looks set to miss a few weeks at least.

According to Slot, though, Morton’s misfortune has opened the door for another young player to shine.

Morton almost left Liverpool on transfer deadline day this week, but a prospective move to Middlesbrough was never completed.

The 22-year-old has played only five times this season, and fell behind James McConnell during Liverpool’s recent trip to PSV Eindhoven.

After that game, Slot insisted that McConnell would not be sent on-loan in the last days of the window, and asked again about that stance on Friday, the Liverpool head coach revealed that Morton’s new injury had played a part in his thinking.

“I think you watched the PSV game as well, so that’s what you saw, what I see is on the training pitch he is competing with all the other midfielders, always giving everything he has,” said Slot.

“Tyler Morton is also out with an injury for a while.

I think he was our sixth midfielder and that means James is taking that position for the upcoming weeks as well, so it’s a combination of both, him doing really well and the injury of Tyler Morton.”

Pushed on what problem Morton had picked up, Slot confirmed that the midfielder has an issue with his shoulder.

“He has a shoulder injury and will be out for weeks or maybe even longer,” he remarked.

As well as issuing a disappointing update on Morton, Slot did give some exact quotes on whether he’s expecting Alexander-Arnold to be ready for the Merseyside Derby.

“Difficult to say,” he said.

“Like I said before, it’s not going to take months and not even weeks but that’s only three days after the Plymouth Argyle game, so let’s wait and see if he is available.

“We also have to look at the long term, of course we don’t want to take any risks with so many games afterwards coming up.
