The Athletic have provided a further update on Anthony Gordon now that the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules (PSR) deadline has passed.

At least six Premier League teams are worried about remaining under the £105 million ($133 million) loss cap during a three-year accounting period.

One of these clubs is Newcastle United, and news caught on like a wildfire over the past weekend when it emerged that Anthony Gordon could be a player that Newcastle has to sell to balance the books.

The Daily Mail previously reported that discussions fell through when Newcastle had asked for Jarell Quansah to go the other way – something Liverpool were not prepared to agree to.

The Reds were also said to be adamant about Gordon’s arrival due to the options they already have in wide areas.

In January 2023, Gordon made a high-profile move to Newcastle United for a reported £45 million after handing in a transfer request at Everton.

His playstyle includes excellent dribbling, speed, and the ability to take on defenders one-on-one.

He is also known for his work rate and pressing ability, which align well with Liverpool’s overall mentality and ethos.

During the 2023/24 season at Newcastle, Gordon made 33 appearances, scoring six goals and providing five assists.

One of the main factors that was making a transfer feasible for both clubs was the fact that Newcastle United needed to balance their books in regard to PSR.

Now that the deadline has passed, many have been wondering what that means for Anthony Gordon and a potential switch to Anfield.

The Athletic provide Anthony Gordon update

The Athletic reveal that Newcastle United chiefs were under considerable stress this past weekend, with reporter Chris Waugh noting:

“Multiple senior figures have described this past week as the most difficult of their careers and the intense stress was felt from the boardroom to the head coach and through into the squad.”

Yankuba Minteh has already been sold to Brighton by the Magpies, netting them a reported £33 million in transfer fees.

Furthermore, boyhood academy product Elliot Anderson has been sold to Nottingham Forest for a reported £35m as well.

Therefore, it seems that there is no urgent need to let go of Anthony Gordon from Newcastle’s perspective as the PSR deadline has passed and the Magpies have seemingly made the sales they need to balance the books.

However, Athletic journalist Chris Waugh believes that the story is not over yet, writing:

“Conversations with Liverpool over Gordon came out of desperation, despite Newcastle wanting to retain the winger, but there are lingering fears internally that his head may have been turned.”

“Premier League clubs speculated that Newcastle’s black hole was anywhere between £30m and £100m and, by Saturday morning, Newcastle still needed to recoup in excess of £50m.”

“Whether Newcastle have satisfied PSR remains unclear given the opaque nature of the system, although some insiders believe they have done enough to avoid a points deduction, even if the calculation is believed to be tight.”

It then seems that the saga is not over yet, and it could even be in a future transfer window where Liverpool eventually make a concrete move for the former Everton man.
