As Liverpool continue their pursuit of the Premier League title under Arne Slot, reports have asserted the club is already planning for what promises to be one of the most significant transfer windows in recent memory.
With several star players’ contracts expiring and multiple positions requiring reinforcement, summer 2025 is shaping up to be a period of change at Anfield.
The most pressing issue facing Liverpool’s hierarchy is the contract situations of three pillars of their recent success.
Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold all have deals expiring this summer, creating a potential exodus of world-class talent that would require substantial reinvestment.
The Egyptian’s departure would create an enormous void in Liverpool’s attack that sporting director Richard Hughes will need to address urgently.
A player who has posted 32 goals and 22 assists in 43 games this season is currently what heading out of the exit door as things stand
Meanwhile, club captain Van Dijk’s future remains uncertain.
Despite ongoing optimism about his commitment, the Dutchman has indicated that discussions continue without resolution11.
At 33, any new deal would likely take him beyond his 34th birthday in July.
Perhaps most concerning for Liverpool supporters is the situation with Alexander-Arnold, with interest from Real Madrid reported to be “very strong”.
The academy graduate’s potential departure would be particularly painful, and while Conor Bradley has shown promise as a backup, his injury history means another right-back would need to be acquired.
Speaking back in January to the BBC, Arne Slot confirmed that the club would be making moves in the summer window:
“I know people sometimes question us because they haven’t seen us doing a lot in the transfer market in the summer and now in the winter as well.
There’s a reason for that – because we’re happy with the squad.”
“But I do know we’re definitely working on strengthening in the summer.”
Beyond the contract uncertainties surrounding Salah, Van Dijk, and Alexander-Arnold, other Liverpool players could be on the move.
His potential departure could further necessitate attacking reinforcements.
But according to the Athletic, Liverpool fans should not be holding thumbs for a high-profile, ready-made player – be it for the forward ranks or elsewhere.
“The financial landscape looks considerably better courtesy of a lucrative return to the Champions League,” James Pearce wrote for the Athletic.
“Commercial revenues continue to climb, there’s the new kit deal with Adidas and a money-spinning pre-season tour of the Far East on the horizon.”
But then the caveat arrived:
‘However, FSG’s self-sustaining business model won’t change?
It’s down to Edwards and Hughes to decide how best to spend the money the club generates.”
“Liverpool’s data-led approach is more likely to lead them to players on the way up with a point to prove rather than buying the finished articles with eye-watering price tags.”
For most Liverpool fans, it should not be a surprise to hear this from reporters close to the club.
And the ‘finished article’ with an ‘eye-watering’ price tag unfortunately perfectly describes reported Liverpool target Alexander Isak.
