The Athletic has provided an update on the links between Liverpool and Aurelien Tchouameni that have sprung up in recent weeks.
Liverpool, but seemingly more Jurgen Klopp, had a long-term interest in the player, dating back to the 23-year-old’s time in Monaco.
Klopp attempted to persuade Tchouameni to join Liverpool when the player was ready to leave Monaco in the summer of 2022, but the Frenchman instead chose to join Real Madrid.
Tchouameni joined the La Liga club in a deal worth more than €100m, and it’s fair to say he has not exactly been an overwhelming hit at the Bernabeu since.
His recent performances have drawn criticism from fans and analysts alike.
Notably, during a recent 3-1 defeat to AC Milan, his errors were directly linked to goals conceded, resulting in his substitution at halftime and subsequent jeers from the crowd.
Such incidents have intensified discussions about his role in the team and potential availability in the transfer market.
One Spanish report has asserted that in the absence of Toni Kroos, Tchouameni has been asked to take on a more demanding role.
He has struggled to adapt to the extensive defensive and creative responsibilities, exposing tactical gaps that have concerned the club’s analysts.
The report goes on further to claim that the record European champions are ‘open to listening’ to offers for the 24-year-old.
A combination of all these factors has reignited Liverpool’s links with the Frenchman.
What did the Athletic report on Aurelien Tchouameni?
In a recent episode of the Walk On Podcast, James Pearce discussed Liverpool’s January transfer plans, stating that current reports linking the club to Aurélien Tchouaméni lack substance.
According to Pearce, there is no indication that there is a basis for these rumors at this time:
“No, all quiet at the moment.
You know, there’s been a lot of talk about Tchouameni, hasn’t there, at Real Madrid?” Pearce said.
“Talk about them potentially looking to move him on.
And I think mainly because obviously we know Liverpool was so keen a couple of years ago when he went from Monaco to Real Madrid, that those links have surfaced.”
“But I’ve been told at the minute there’s nothing concrete in that.
I think a lot will depend on how Liverpool gets through this period up to January.
And effectively he’s got that.”
It then seems highly unlikely the Reds will make a move for the Frenchman anytime soon; it feels like 2022 was the last opportunity to secure the signing.
