If Liverpool is to win a second Premier League title - and a 20th top-flight crown - it will need a bit of luck along the way.
All champions do.
And it might have benefitted from the Premier League’s scheduling over a weekend that feels significant in the title race.
Liverpool approached the latest round of games two points ahead of second-placed Chelsea - a healthy position but one that might have caused a few jitters among fans.
Just three weeks prior and the Reds had sat seven points clear at the top of table and, had results gone differently over the weekend, they could actually have kicked off the game at Tottenham Hotspur in second place.
Liverpool has dropped points in each of the last two, but one came from a difficult trip to St James’ Park and another after the Reds were reduced to 10 men early on against Fulham but battled back impressively to rescue a draw.
In fact, a situation where Chelsea had beaten Everton and Liverpool dropped points against Spurs felt entirely plausible, as did the thought of the Reds squandering a nine-point gap and sitting second second at Christmas.
There was also a slight irony that Chelsea’s dropped points came in blustery conditions on Merseyside while Liverpool’s confident win in London was played in much calmer conditions.
