Liverpool are currently in cruise control of their 2024-25 season so far.
The Reds sit atop of the Premier League and UEFA Champions League standings and are well on course to gain a substantial amount from their success this season, if they continue in this upward trajectory.
We will be taking a closer look into the money that Liverpool could earn from both competitions.
PREMIER LEAGUE PRIZE MONEY
The Premier League is the most lucrative league in world football.
It is most-watched sports league in the world, broadcasted in 212 regions and 643 million homes, alongside a potential television audience of 4.7 billon people.
The league is the most-watched because it is considered the highest quality of football, with the best players and teams on show each week, whilst the money generated is off the scales.
The current domestic and international deals are worth £5 billion and £5.05 billion, and from the start of the 2025-26 campaign, a new domestic deal will fund £6.7 billion.
Premier League teams are guaranteed a fixed amount of £9.4m in commercial payments, as well as an equal share of the income generated from the broadcast deals.
Final league positions at the end of a season can also effect how much a club can earn, and each one is worth an extra £3.1 million, although all twenty clubs are rewarded with a guaranteed £79.2 million, before the league position is even taken into account.
Financial Fair Play (FFP) and the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) has also brought an inflation in revenue, but an affect to clubs’ spending powers.
Financial Fair Play was brought in to prevent clubs from spending more than they earn, and under the Profit and Sustainability Rules, clubs cannot post losses of more than £105 million over a three-year period.
As for Liverpool, in 2023-24, they pocketed a total amount of £165m in revenue for a third-place finish, whilst progression to the quarter-finals of the Europa League earned the club an extra £27 million.
This would have taken the total prize money for last season to a sizeable chunk of more than £190m.
If Manchester City’s Premier League title triumph from last season is anything to go by, then Liverpool would pocket upwards of £60 million.
UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE PRIZE MONEY
The UEFA Champions League is seen as the pinnacle of club football.
Strong performance throughout the competition will undoubtedly bring in income.
For the revamped 2024-25 season of the UEFA Champions League, there has been one drastic change.
UEFA have diverted from the traditional 32-team group stage, to 36 teams competing in one big league phase, before experiencing the classic knockout rounds.
This new format has increased the revenue from last season’s total of £1.74 billon to now £2.06 billion and teams automatically earn £17 million for participating.
Liverpool find themselves in a great position in the League Phase.
A 100% record sees the Reds sitting in top spot as it stands and the earnings for each league-phase win are worth around £1.7 million, whilst a draw bags an amount of £700k.
The Reds are guaranteed to earn an added bonus of £2 million for securing their spot in the top-eight, alongside an extra £9.3 million for progressing to the last-16.
If Arne Slot’s side are to reach the Quarter-Final stage, then the club will pocket a further £10.6 million.
Semi-Finals would achieve £12.7 million, whilst becoming winners will guarantee an additional £21.1 million, £15.6 million for the runner-up.
If Liverpool were to go all the way in the UEFA Champions League this season, then they would receive a total amount of £67.6 million for their success.
If we add this to the estimated sum of upwards of £60 million for winning the Premier League, then Liverpool’s total amount for the 2024-25 campaign could total to £127.6 million.
The prize money in both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League can be used as a major incentive for Liverpool to go all guns blazing for both competitions, and right now, they find themselves in the best position to do so.
