Liverpool came away from the City Ground disappointed to have only taken a point on Tuesday night.

Given their reactions after the game, Nottingham Forest were also slightly frustrated that they hadn’t won their battle against the Premier League leaders, too.

But while Forest will perhaps feel this was an opportunity missed against a mostly undercooked Liverpool team, Arne Slot’s side certainly ended up looking the more likely winners.

Throughout the first-half, that was not the case.

Forest soaked up the pressure from Liverpool and hit them with a sucker punch on the break.

From there, the defensive resoluteness of the likes of Murillo in particular showed that it’s no fluke that Forest are second in the Premier League table.

But during the second-half, there was only one likely winner, as ‘keeper Matz Sels put in the performance of a life time for the home team.

And speaking after the match, Forest boss Nuno Espirito Santo acknowledged the danger Liverpool eventually posed his players.

Liverpool supporters – and certainly their head coach – will be pleased to see the back of Forest this season.

Fans at the City Ground sang about Slot at every opportunity, perhaps adding a certain irony to their claims that the Liverpool head coach had their team ‘in his head.’

Nevertheless, despite the bullishness of the home support, they were second best for the second-half, in which Liverpool were unlucky not to score more.

This was something Nuno was happy to concede after the game while speaking to BBC Sport.

“The first-half was organised, we didn’t allow too many chances to Liverpool,” said the Portuguese manager.

We knew in the second-half they were going to react and there was a moment where the game was up and down and that’s when Liverpool become dangerous with the speed and the talent, they create so many chances.

“We have to be fair with the game, Liverpool had chances,” Nuno added.

At half-time, every Liverpool fan must have been feeling as though they’d seen this movie before: dominate the ball, create very little and then give up an easy goal against the run of play.

At the break, most will have been settled in to watch more of the same for another 45 minutes.

However, Liverpool have been a different beasts in second-halves under Slot.

The Dutch coach is a master at pinpointing weaknesses and correcting them as games go on.

That was exactly what he did on Tuesday and Liverpool will take much from their second-half showing against a team who have been on an incredible run.

All that was missing was that second goal.
