'This is at the Etihad': Troy Deeney blown away by what he spotted Virgil van Dijk doing against Man City

Liverpool sent out a statement to the rest of the Premier League with a controlled win over Manchester City on Sunday.

The Reds have had a tough time trying to break City down at the Etihad Stadium over the years, with the ground becoming a hard place to pick up three points.

That changed on Sunday, though, with the stars aligning for Liverpool to record an impressive 2-0 victory.

As he often has this season, Mohamed Salah took the headlines once again, but this was a superb team performance from the Reds.

One of the more unsung heroes was Virgil van Dijk, who marshalled his defence impeccably towards a clean sheet.

Van Dijk has a tendency to make these difficult feats look impossibly easy.

And according to Troy Deeney, he was doing it again at the Etihad.

Van Dijk has had another imperious season for Liverpool.

The 33-year-old is still yet to miss a minute of action in the Premier League for the Reds.

On Sunday, he and Ibrahima Konate seemed to repel anything that City sent their way as they limited the champions to just five shots on target.

Others in the defence and midfield helped with that, but Van Dijk was – and always is – the clear ringleader.

And with the Dutchman marshalling his teammates around him, Deeney spotted him taking a ‘Sunday walk’ during one Man City attack.

“I just want you to keep an eye on Van Dijk, I spotted this in the game,” the former striker told BBC Match of the Day while showing a City attack during the first-half.

“This is a Sunday walk for Virgil van Dijk.

Well done lads, don’t worry, we’re so comfortable.”

Unusually, Van Dijk did not give his immediate reaction following Sunday’s win.

One was former Liverpool centre-back Jamie Carragher, who used just one word to describe Van Dijk’s display.

Reacting to a post from Liverpool’s official X account which featured Van Dijk and Konate, Carragher used just one word to sum the pair up.

“Colossal,” wrote the pundit, along with a bicep emoji and a smiling face wearing sunglasses.

We couldn’t put it better ourselves.

Konate deserves huge praise for his own display, but Van Dijk is the main man here.
