Number five on the list is the six goal thriller on New Year’s Day, last season.

Despite the 4-2 scoreline, Anfield witnessed one of Liverpool’s most dominant performances at home.

The sides went into half-time goalless, with Mohamed Salah missing the best chance of the first half as his penalty was saved by Nick Pope, with Trent Alexander-Arnold making a mess of the rebound.

The opening goal for Liverpool came courtesy of Salah in the 49th minute.

Luis Diaz worked wonders on the edge of the area with quick feet to then find Darwin Nunez, who laid the ball on a plate for the Egyptian King to net his 150th Premier League goal for the Reds.

Although, Newcastle pulled level through Alexander Isak minutes later.

The centre-half headed in Newcastle’s second of the evening from a corner-kick, unmarked, setting up a nervy final ten minutes for the home side.

The nerves lasted for all of just five minutes though, as Jota was adjudged to have been bundled over in the box by Pope, and the referee awarded Liverpool their second penalty of the night.

Salah made no mistake this time and dispatched his effort into the bottom-left corner, as Pope dived to the right.

Four goals and three points for Liverpool as they began 2024 in perfect fashion.

The Reds had also recorded the highest ever XG (Expected Goals) stat of 7.27 from 34 shots, smashing the previous record of 5.87 in their 6-0 victory over Leeds United in 2021, and Manchester City’s 8-0 victory over Watford in 2019.

Sami Hyypia then added a second in the 36th minute.

He leaped highest from a corner and powered a header beyond the scrambling Newcastle players and goalkeeper.

The Magpies then replied from a corner of their own.

David Edgar met the ball at the near post and headed past Pepe Reina, into the far corner, to half the deficit.

Ryan Babel then found Liverpool’s third in the fiftieth minute of the game.

He srambled the ball over the goal-line following a tussle with a number of opposition players, from Gerrard’s dangerous corner delivery.

Lucas Leiva assisted Gerrard for his second and the Reds’ fourth in the 66th minute.

The skipper ran in-behind the Newcastle defence and neatly lobbed Shay Given to put the result beyond any doubt.

Liverpool then added insult to injury with a fifth goal from the penalty spot, after Edgar was adjudged to have swiped David Ngog in the penalty area.

Xabi Alonso added the icing on the cake to a brilliant afternoon at St.James’ Park.

At number two, is Liverpool’s dramatic 3-2 victory against the Magpies back in May, 2019.

Sandwiched in-between a two-legged UEFA Champions League semi-final tie with Barcelona, the Reds travelled to St.James’ Park without the ever-reliant Roberto Firmino due to injury, meaning Divock Origi had the chance to lead the line in the Brazilian’s absence.

Virgil van Dijk headed Liverpool in-front from a corner as the Dutchman was allowed time to move ahead of his marker and power home for one-nil after just thirteen minutes.

Christian Atsu scored the equaliser seven minutes later after Salomon Rondon’s effort was blocked on the line, and he made no mistake in firing the ball beyond Alisson and Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The latter then delivered a first-time ball into Mohamed Salah and the Egyptian hit a side-footed shot into the bottom-left corner, to regain Liverpool’s one goal advantage.

The Reds went into the interval ahead.

Rondon then instinctively volleyed home the Magpies’ second goal of the game, gaining the bounce of the ball from a corner to level the scores at 2-2.

Divock Origi then became Liverpool’s saviour in the 86th minute, stealing all three points with a flick on from Alexander-Arnold’s set piece.

This victory displayed many signs of the mentality monsters under Jurgen Klopp.

In April 1996, Anfield played host to one of the all-time Premier League classics.

Liverpool had to come from behind twice, to edge out as 4-3 victors.

Robbie Fowler headed the Reds ahead inside two minutes, courtesy of a brilliant Stan Collymore cross.

Les Ferdinand equalised minutes later, following good footwork from Faustino Asprilla.

Steve McManaman drove towards the Toon defence before assisting the onrushing Fowler, for a first-time finish into the corner.

It was game on.

But, Newcastle bounced back immediately as Asprilla beat the Liverpool offside trap, to poke the ball home for 3-2.

The goals wouldn’t stop there though as Collymore got the better of the defender at the far-post to level the game for a third time.

Then, Collymore scored a last-gasp winner in the dying moments that brought out an iconic commentary moment from Martin Tyler.

“Collymore closing in!” was the words Tyler screamed, as the Liverpool forward stole the victory right at the death, leading Newcastle boss and former Red, Kevin Keegan, to hang his head in devastation on the touchline.

Liverpool have been involved in some classic Premier League encounters against Newcastle United over the years, with many high-scoring affairs.

A further three points tonight would continue the Reds’ promising charge towards a second-ever Premier League title.
