Trent Alexander-Arnold's time at Liverpool appears to be coming to an end as widespread reports suggest a deal to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer is close.

With the end of the season is fast approaching, there has been little to no movement regarding the contracts of three of the Reds' most important players. Alexander-Arnold, Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk are all set to become free agents in the summer, but none of the three have committed their futures to the Reds.

Reports throughout this season have suggested that Alexander-Arnold is more likely to leave than stay, given the strong links to Real Madrid. If rumours in the media this week are to be believed, it’s a case of when, not if, the right-back’s move to Spain will be confirmed.

So, here’s a round-up of all the latest news and rumours surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s future at Anfield.

Only a matter of time

News outlets in Spain have been reporting since the end of 2024 that Alexander-Arnold is expected to join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. These rumours have only intensified in recent months as the defender's contract has ticked down into its final six months.

The latest from Relevo suggests that Alexander-Arnold's move is now all but confirmed, and it’s only a matter of time until the news becomes official. The transfer has been described as a 'market opportunity that couldn’t be missed,' given the struggles Carlo Ancelotti's side have endured at right-back this season."

Alexander-Arnold 'agrees' Real Madrid move

The fact that reports of Alexander-Arnold's decision to join Real Madrid initially emerged from Spanish sources offered a glimmer of hope to Liverpool fans for a while. That being said, news has now trickled into the English media, which only suggests the reports have some credibility.

From an English perspective, talkSPORT is the first major news organisation to echo the reports from Spain. It has been claimed that Alexander-Arnold has agreed to a five-year deal with the La Liga giants worth over £220,000 per week, and he is ready to end his 20-year association with his boyhood club.

The article confirms that the defender has been in talks with Real Madrid since January this year, when his contract entered its final six months and he became free to talk with clubs outside of England. Despite months of negotiations with Liverpool, Alexander-Arnold has reportedly now decided that his future lies elsewhere.

Real Madrid 'working' to close deal

The Athletic's David Ornstein has also reported that Real Madrid are doing everything in their power to get a deal over the line. However, he does note that the Spanish club must inform Liverpool if and when a deal is done, which has not yet happened.

Fabrizio Romano has also weighed in, suggesting that a deal is getting 'closer and closer'. His report claims that discussions are ongoing and all parties involved in the deal are confident an agreement will be reached, which once again comes as a bitter blow to Liverpool.

Liverpool 'approach' replacement

With news of Alexander-Arnold's lucrative deal with Real Madrid now being reported, so too are links with his potential replacement. According to Sky in Switzerland, Bayer Leverkusen's Jeremie Frimpong has been identified as the ideal signing.

The report indicates that head coach Arne Slot has already been in contact with the Dutchman's representatives, and Liverpool are prepared to test the Bundesliga club's resolve. It has been suggested that Frimpong is valued by his club at around £42m, and the Reds are readying an initial offer.

Not only that, the article even goes as far as saying the 24-year-old is open to a move to Anfield. It wouldn't be the first time he has been linked with Liverpool, as Frimpong admitted in a recent interview that he initially chose the Reds' academy as a youngster, but instead had to join Manchester City as it was much closer to where he lived as a child.
