Liverpool got the job done against Southampton, but it was far from their best performance.
The Reds secured a crucial three points, extending their lead at the top of the table.
However, the manner of the win left a lot to be desired.
At this stage of the season, results matter more than performances.
But when a team like Liverpool sets high standards, they expect to play well every game.
The first half against Southampton was not up to those standards.
The team looked off the pace, struggled to control the game, and found themselves in a difficult position.
Trent Alexander-Arnold admits what Liverpool are not proud of in Southampton win
Trent Alexander-Arnold didn’t hold back in his assessment of that first half.
“Obviously very, very, very disappointing first half, one that we are not proud of by any means.”
Liverpool were second-best, and Alexander-Arnold admitted they deserved to be behind.
“I think rightly so, wasn’t good enough, deserved to be down I suppose.”
But the response after halftime was what mattered.
“We played with intent, with meaning, and with purpose, and you could see that from the start, we had a point to prove.”
The team turned things around, controlling the game and securing the win.
“Outstanding performance in the second half, we really showed the quality we’ve got, controlled the game in the way we wanted to.”
Alexander-Arnold also emphasized the importance of taking three points, even on tough days.
“You are going to have days like these where you don’t play well, you’re not proud of the performance… but yeah, we got the three points, that’s the most important thing.”
Liverpool now shift focus to the Champions League and Carabao Cup final, with Alexander-Arnold looking ahead.
“We have to get a good result on Wednesday, and obviously, the Carabao Cup final is always a pleasure to play in.”
