In an exclusive interview with The Mirror Trent, 25, revealed, the secrets of England’s penalty victory after years of losing out, is feelings when he learned that manager Gareth Southgate had decided to resign, the dismay in the camp when former Three Lions striker turned pundit Gary Lineker called them ‘s****’ and living with the 'price of fame'.

In a no-holds-barred interview, the down-to-earth Liverpool lad, from West Derby, told of his feelings of pride and relief when he fired home the penalty which took England through to the semi-finals against Switzerland.

When Gareth Southgate announced he was stepping down this week, Trent said: “It was similar to how I felt when my club manager Jurgen Klopp was leaving.

It was clear when he announced when he was leaving, the conversations I have had with him, everything on social media, he seems to be enjoying his time off, so it would be a huge surprise.”

He added of departing England chief Southgate, who is tipped for a knighthood: “I can only be thankful for every opportunity I have been given and the memories that we have shared.

You respect their expertise and decisions, but in the back of your mind, you always know they are the boss.”

Criticism by Gary Lineker of their performances, which the Match of the Day host described as ‘sh***’, had helped to galvanise the team spirit.

“But once it hits the back of the net, it is all about the magnitude of what you have done, what it means to the manager, what it means to the group, and the many people watching.

I see it more as an opportunity rather than pressure, you are confident in knowing you have prepared yourself, preparation means confidence in life and that applies in matches.”

Trent has become accustomed to the ‘price of fame’, being asked for autographs and selfies, stopping to talk to fans, is all part of the media spotlight for him.
