Arne Slot has provided a Trent Alexander-Arnold injury update in his pre-Newcastle United press conference.
The Liverpool right-back faces a race against time to be fit for Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Newcastle United after sustaining an ankle injury during Tuesday night’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.
The England international was forced off in the 73rd minute of the match at Anfield with a suspected ankle sprain.
Medical staff quickly attended to the defender, with a stretcher initially prepared before Alexander-Arnold managed to get back to his feet.
The severity of the injury became apparent as the Liverpool vice-captain took more than four minutes to slowly hobble around the perimeter of the pitch and down the tunnel.
Observers at Anfield noted that Alexander-Arnold appeared devastated as he made his way off, raising immediate concerns about ligament damage rather than a simple twist or bruise.
The club had scheduled a comprehensive scan to determine the exact nature and extent of the injury.
And after giving a ‘wait and see’ diagnosis earlier in the week, Slot has now revealed his latest on Trent Alexaner-Arnold ahead of the Wembley showpiece on Sunday:
“Trent is indeed not available, he will not be there at the final.”
“We still need to assess how long he will be out but we do except him back before the end of the season,” Slot said in his pre-Newcastle United press conference.
Alexander-Arnold’s absence creates a significant selection headache for Slot ahead of his first final as Liverpool manager.
The right-back position has become particularly problematic, with natural backup Conor Bradley still sidelined with a muscle injury sustained in the 2-2 draw with Aston Villa in January.
Joe Gomez, who has deputized at right-back in the past, is also unavailable due to a hamstring injury of his own that will keep him out until April.
Jarell Quansah replaced Alexander-Arnold against PSG and could be asked to fill the role again at Wembley.
