Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold has faced an extended spell on the sidelines after sustaining a high ankle sprain during the club’s dramatic Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain on March 11.
The injury, which occurred during the second leg of the round of 16 tie at Anfield, has already forced the 26-year-old to miss critical fixtures and threatens to derail his involvement in Liverpool’s Premier League title push.
Alexander-Arnold’s injury unfolded in the 73rd minute of a tense clash with PSG.
While attempting to dispossess Vitinha near the touchline, the right-back’s right ankle became trapped in the turf, causing a violent twist.
He immediately signaled for assistance, with medical staff rushing to his aid.
Though a stretcher was initially brought out, Alexander-Arnold managed to walk gingerly to the dressing room, visibly distraught.
The timing proved disastrous for Liverpool.
Just five days later, the Reds faced Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley, a match Alexander-Arnold watched from the stands as Jarell Quansah deputized in an unfamiliar right-back role.
Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat highlighted his absence, with the team struggling to replicate his creative output and Mohamed Salah struggled without his chief distributor.
And it seems that Reds fans should not be holding out for a return of the vice-captain anytime soon.
Sky Sports have provided their latest Trent Alexander-Arnold injury update, and it’s not positive news.
Sky reporter Richard Morgan was at the AXA this morning as the Reds players convened for their first training session of the international break, and has suggested that Alexander-Arnold will not be back until May and is therefore ruled out of the Merseyside derby:
“Liverpool’s players gathered at the AXA Training Centre on Monday with Konate, Alisson and Gravenberch all spotted limbering up after scares for their respective countries during the recent international break,” he wrote.
“However, there was no sign of either Alexander-Arnold or Gomez, with both defenders expected to be out of action until May with ankle and hamstring issues respectively.”
“As for Alexander-Arnold’s deputy at right back, Bradley, the Northern Ireland international was seen doing an individual session [pictured] as he looks to build up his fitness levels.”
This marks Alexander-Arnold’s third significant injury in 12 months:
November 2024: Hamstring strain vs.
Aston Villa (missed 3 weeks)
February 2025: Leg injury vs?
Bournemouth (missed League Cup semi-final)1115
March 2025: Ankle injury vs PSG
A best-case scenario sees him featuring against Tottenham on April 27—a match that could decide the title if Arsenal are still in the picture by then.
For now, Slot must navigate a defining period without one of his best platers.
