A return date for Trent Alexander-Arnold has now been penciled in ahead of the final month of the Premier League season.
Liverpool’s title charge hit unexpected turbulence following Trent Alexander-Arnold’s ankle injury, although it has proved not to be too much of an issue.
But Mohamed Salah’s dwindling goals since the injury underscore the defender’s irreplaceable creative influence.
Alexander-Arnold suffered a high ankle sprain during Liverpool’s Champions League exit to Paris Saint-Germain on March 11, colliding with advertising boards after an aerial duel.
Scans revealed ligament damage between the tibia and fibula, sidelining him until late April.
It all comes against the backdrop of the Real Madrid speculation.
While no formal agreement has yet been signed, it has been widely reported that Real Madrid are very optimistic about securing the Scouser’s signature.
Despite offering a lucrative contract extension worth a reported £78 million over five years, Liverpool appears to have failed to convince Trent Alexander-Arnold to remain at Anfield.
Manager Arne Slot publicly praised the defender’s commitment as recently as January, but it seems his departure is being touted as inevitable.
Madrid may pay Liverpool up to £1 million to release him early so he can participate in June’s Club World Cup group-stage matches – ahead of his contract expiring on July 1, 2025.
But before all of that, most Reds fans still expect the 26-year-old to play some part in the rest of the campaign.
Now the Athletic have provided an update on the most likely return date, with James Pearce suggesting that Sunday, 28 April at home to Tottenham Hotspur is the most realistic date to return:
“Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold has stepped up his recovery from an ankle injury by returning to training at Kirkby,” he wrote.
“Alexander-Arnold only took part in elements of Wednesday’s session as he will be gradually integrated back into full training by head coach Arne Slot and his staff.”
“It remains to be seen whether Sunday’s trip to Leicester City comes too soon for the academy graduate to feature.
A more likely comeback date is the visit of Tottenham Hotspur to Anfield the following Sunday.”
This marks Alexander-Arnold’s third significant injury in 12 months:
November 2024: Hamstring strain vs.
Aston Villa (missed 3 weeks)
February 2025: Leg injury vs?
Bournemouth (missed League Cup semi-final)
