Trent Alexander-Arnold was just about the most talked-about England player heading into Euro 2024.

Despite some injury troubles, the 25-year-old was coming off one of his best individual seasons in the 2023/24 season.

Traditionally known as one of the best right-backs in the world, Alexander-Arnold was deployed in midfield by manager Gareth Southgate for the opening two games of the tournament.

England kicked off their Euro 2024 campaign with a narrow but hard-fought 1-0 victory over Serbia, followed up by two draws in the group stage.

And it seemed that Alexander-Arnold’s tournament was taking a turn for the worst when he was benched for the final game of the group.

But Liverpool’s vice-captain did not take it too negatively and came off the bench against the Swiss late in extra-time to smash in a convincing penalty to send England to the semi-finals.

What did Trent Alexander-Arnold say about his Euro 2024?

Trent Alexander-Arnold is hugely experienced despite only being 25 years old.

He has played in three Champions League finals, won the Premier League, and generally has been a key player in a world-class side.

He alluded to some of these successful nights but also the bitter defeats that has made him ready for a tournament like the Euros:

“I think the journey I’ve been on throughout football so far has taken me to ups and downs,” Alexander-Arnold began via the Mirror.

“My high moments and low moments and it’s in those times that you realise what you can put yourself through mentally and overcome.”

“So whatever the game throws at me now I feel like I’m in a position to deal with it and be able to perform and do the best in whatever role that is.”

“So for me there is no pressure, there is no feeling of the mentality.”

“The mentality is to help the team win the game so when the manager tells me that you’re coming on with five or six minutes to go then I know my role, know what I need to do and my mindset is in the right place no matter what.”

While it seems unlikely that the Liverpool man will start against the Netherlands, Alexander-Arnold revealed that he is not too worried about that and that everybody has a role to play.

The players who don’t make it on the pitch are still training and helping to sharpen the ‘starters’.

They also have responsibility to not spoil the team’s atmosphere by sulking because they are not playing:

“As a player, all 26 of us want to play as many minutes as we can.

Obviously that isn’t possible, so the manager has to pick a team and we all respect his decisions.”

“No matter how many minutes you play and when you get on the pitch, you have a role to play.”

“We all buy into that and we have bought into that from the very beginning.

No matter what role you play, you earn your medal.

You see that togetherness in the group,” Alexander-Arnold explained.

“I think for me it’s all part and parcel of football.

The game takes you on a journey.”

“Of course I would have liked to keep my position in the team and be starting every game, but the manager has made decisions and I respect his decisions.”

“And they have worked – we are still in the competition.

We are looking forward to a semi-final.”

“No matter what, the team always comes first and you have to buy into that to give the team the best chance possible and be ready for your moment whenever that comes.?”

“I’ll give everything I’ve got, like I’ve done so far?
