Trent Alexander-Arnold has reportedly delayed confirmation of his move to Real Madrid in order to not distract from Liverpool's title charge.

Rumours that have been gathering pace for months finally materialised into something more concrete on Tuesday, with various outlets stating that the right-back is now closing on a move to the Spanish capital.

While Alexander-Arnold has not addressed any update himself, several publications and broadcasters have claimed that he will leave the Reds as a free agent this summer and head to Madrid.

Whatever the reality, it appears that Liverpool's best efforts to convince Alexander-Arnold to stay on Merseyside have failed.

However, it's believed that any news about a move has been kept under wraps due to the player preferring to keep his powder dry until the Reds had sewn up the Premier League title this season, showing that the player does harbour a great respect for his boyhood club.

While some fans may be appeased by Alexander-Arnold's show of civility by refusing to drag his contract issues into the public forum, the flipside to that coin is the peculiar timing of Tuesday's breaking news.

But the latest update may suggest Alexander-Arnold feels he and his team-mates already have one hand on the trophy.

TalkSPORT state he didn't want to be a distraction to the club's charge for glory this season and that the full-back wouldn't want to court blame for any capitulation, should his move be announced and Liverpool hit a rocky run of form in the league.

While talkSPORT have claimed Alexander-Arnold has reached an agreement with Carlo Ancelotti's side, The Athletic contest that he is still to flesh out personal terms and the club are still working on a deal to bring him to Spain.

The news, however, will not have caught Liverpool fans off guard.

As reported by the ECHO late last year, Liverpool even received an approach from the Santiago Bernabeu for Alexander-Arnold during the January transfer window.

This came as a shock considering the La Liga giants could just wait six months and secure the player for free, rather than pay a fee as they would have had to have done in the winter.

Meanwhile, speaking in September 2024, Alexander-Arnold gave little away when asked about his future, yet stopped short of saying he will be in red come next season.

"Look, I have been at the club 20 years now, I have signed four or five a contract extensions and none of those have been played out in public.
