'Trying to close the transfer': Liverpool are now on the verge of signing Mexico international - journalist

Liverpool are running out of time to add to their squad before the transfer deadline passes.

The Reds have had a quiet first summer under sporting director Richard Hughes, with only one piece of business completed so far.

One could become two on Thursday, with Federico Chiesa set to join Liverpool from Juventus in a cut-price deal.

However, even with the additions of Chiesa and goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili, who has since been loaned to Valencia, the Liverpool squad looks slightly short.

Nevertheless, while the window is still open, the possibilities for new arrivals remains.

And according to an interesting report out of Mexico, Liverpool are on the hunt for more.

With Chiesa due to arrive, Liverpool look well stocked in forward areas for a long time into the future.

The six top quality forwards Arne Slot has available to him does not even count youngsters like Ben Doak.

Doak reportedly has seven offers on the table as he prepares to leave on loan.

Despite that, Mexican journalist Kery Ruiz has claimed that Liverpool are on the verge of sealing a deal to sign Pumas left winger Cesar Huerta.

Interestingly, taking to X on Thursday afternoon, Ruiz says that the Reds will sign Huerta before sending him on-loan to a Championship club until next summer.

“Cesar Huerta is close to being a Liverpool player,” says the journalist.

“The Reds are trying to close the transfer of Chino but he will not go directly to Liverpool.

“His first season will be loaned to a Championship club and in the summer of 2025 he will join the Anfield team.

“Accepting that detail, Liverpool would sign him now.”

With just hours left to go in the transfer window, Liverpool supporters will be wanting transfer news about centre-backs and central midfielders, not new forwards.

Nevertheless, Cesar ‘Chino’ Huerta does look like a very interesting proposition.

As a right-footed left winger, he is perhaps the last thing Liverpool need right now.

Still, Huerta is fast, skilful and perhaps ready to take the next step in his career.

Obviously, a move from the Mexican Liga MX to Liverpool would be a ginormous step.

He would need to develop at a lightning pace to be ready for Liverpool in 2025.

With 10 caps for Mexico, Huerta is clearly a talent, but there’s little to suggest he’s the right man for the Reds.
