Unsung Liverpool hero still unlikely to save Reds career despite stepping up during title run-in - opinion

Liverpool turned to the usual suspects to pull them over the line during a difficult game against West Ham on Sunday.

The Reds were not at their best for large swathes of the match, succumbing to West Ham pressure during the second-half especially.

But, just as they continuously have over the past eight years, Virgil van Dijk and Alisson Becker came to the rescue for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah played a part as well, of course, claiming his 18th Premier League assist of the campaign with a delightful ball in for Luis Diaz.

As praise rains down for Van Dijk, Alisson and Salah, though, Diaz himself is worthy of a mention for his recent form, too.

With Liverpool’s performances stuttering a little, the Colombian has hit two goals and one assist in the Reds’ last three matches.

Unfortunately, however, it does not look like being enough to save his career at Anfield.

With Salah, Van Dijk, Alisson and others such as Alexis Mac Allister leading the charge, Diaz has been overlooked somewhat when dishing out credit for Liverpool’s season.

And yet with plenty of his teammates struggling of late, the 28-year-old has really turned up.

He bagged an exceptional, flicked assist to set Diogo Jota up for the winner against Everton before coming on and almost dragging the Reds to a point at Fulham.

His strike to bring the scoreline to 3-2 was clinical and had Salah provided a better finish when six yards out Diaz could also have had another assist.

And while Diaz’s goal on Sunday was all about the ball from Salah, it was the latest reminder that Arne Slot has seen his No.7 as a key player this term.

It isn’t just his goal contributions, Diaz’s all-round game has improved recently, too.

Getting two goals for Colombia during the March international break looks to have boosted his confidence and he’s brought that back to Anfield.

Despite Diaz coming to the fore at a critical time of the season for Liverpool, it still feels as though we may be seeing the last of him in a red shirt.

Diaz has been heavily linked with Saudi Arabia and will be down to the final two years of his contract in the summer.

Given his overall form this season has been hot and cold, it feels like if a good offer comes in for Diaz then it will be accepted by Liverpool.

The former Porto man has still contributed impressively this season and 16 goal contributions in a Premier League title-winning campaign is not something that should be forgotten on Merseyside.

But it does very much seem as though rather than showing how he can influence Liverpool next season, Diaz is instead putting himself in the shop window for a summer move.
