The Uruguayan Football Association have released a strong statement in light of the unsavoury scenes following their Copa America semi-final exit to Colombia.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez was caught on several videos brawling with opposition supporters in the early hours of Thursday morning.

A shirtless Nunez was pictured in the middle of the incident after a fight appeared to break out between a number of people in the stands.

A full investigation is now expected from governing body CONMEBOL and FIFA may even be involved to determine the full reasons behind the unsavoury scenes.

"The Uruguayan Football Association delegation, present in the United States for more than a month, has been carrying out all activity in an exemplary manner, both in its personal and group attitude and in its public statements," the statement read.

"Respect for the organisation, rivals, journalists, security personnel and general public has been constant, strickly complying with rules of the tournament and traditional values of our country.

"On Wednesday, under a context of verbal violence, provocation and various attacks, a group of Uruguayan fans located behind the substitutes' bench and technical area were involved in various skirmishes that escalated and triggered situations in which several families of players and staff members ended up being involved.

"Face with such a desperate situation, and in moments of nervousness and desperation in which women and children were held hostage, several players went up to the stands to intercede for their protection and defense.

"The event occurred in a context in which the proportion of Uruguayan fans was a minority, most families and there were not sufficient security mechanisms for this situation.

"Given the facts and aforementioned lack of security, the attitude of the players was inevitable and natural.[....]This association in its 124 years of existence proudly privileges the maximum respect for the standards of citizen conduct, banishing all acts of violence in sport.[...]

"Unfortunately, the events reported, generated an unjustified but humanly understandable reaction."

Atletico Madrid and Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez was critical of the action from the authorities as the brawl erupted.
