Despite the pre-international break disappointment of losing the Carabao Cup final and being knocked out of the Champions League, even the most cynical Liverpool fan would agree that Arne Slot has had a fantastic first campaign as head coach.
His side currently sit 12 points clear of Arsenal at the top of the Premier League and could be just weeks away from sealing a second title in 35 years.
Much has been made of Slot’s ability to get the best out of a squad largely unchanged from last season’s, with the rarely seen Federico Chiesa the only addition.
Several of his forward line have struggled for form and goals recently, leaving many fans crying out for attacking reinforcements come summer.
One such candidate could be Lille’s Jonathan David.
David already has a taste for scoring at Anfield as he notched his side’s only goal in a 2-1 Champions League defeat in January.
On the latest episode of our Journo Insight show, we asked the Liverpool Echo’s LFC correspondent Paul Gorst for his thoughts on Jonathan David.

Paul said:
“I imagine Liverpool will be in need of a number nine and there are a few better out there than him at the moment.
“When Liverpool signed Diogo Jota in 2020, there was a three-man shortlist with Jota, Ismaïla Sarr, who was then at Watford, and Jonathan David.
“They are very aware of him and what he can do, and he’s had a really good season by all accounts in Ligue 1.
“You might have to get a little bit creative with the free agent markets, and as a player coming in for nothing, he – to me – seems like he would be a very sensible signing.”
Redmen Reacts
If Liverpool are set to lose a key asset on a free transfer come the end of the season, perhaps it would soften the blow somewhat if they could bring in one of the best-regarded strikers in Europe for free as well.
Jonathan David has never posted the ridiculous numbers we have become accustomed to from likes of Messi, Ronaldo and latterly Mo Salah, but has scored a very respectable 85 goals in 170 Ligue 1 games for Lille and has hit double figures in every season of his professional career.
There is every reason to assume that record could continue for a high-chance creating team like Liverpool, and with the errant finishing of Darwin Nunez testing the patience of fans to breaking point, perhaps a signing like David could be just what the doctor ordered as Arne Slot begins to build a team in his image.
