The Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules could lead to Liverpool getting some late June joy in the transfer market.

The Reds have so far kept their powder dry in the window as they settle into life under Arne Slot.

However, with the deadline for clubs to be compliant coming up on Sunday, Liverpool have been linked with a move for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle.

With things heating up in the market in England, it may not be long before we see some new faces rock up at Anfield.

But it also turns out that further afield in Europe, the screw is also starting to be turned.

Bayern Munich are now said to be furious over what’s going on with one reported Liverpool target.

While Liverpool’s talks to bring Gordon to the club are no doubt exciting, it could be argued that Slot needs new players in other positions more urgently.

Centre-back should be a priority for the new head coach, while a defensive midfielder would be on a lot of supporters’ wish lists, too.

In terms of a midfielder, Liverpool have been strongly linked with a move for Bayern’s Joshua Kimmich.

Although the 29-year-old has been a key player at the Allianz Arena since arriving in 2017, he has just one year left on his contract.

There has been talk recently that Kimmich would be keen to join Liverpool as one of only five clubs this summer.

According to German journalist Christian Falk, there is certainly little chance of the former RB Leipzig man staying beyond the end of his contract in Munich.

Writing for The Daily Briefing, Falk says Bayern are ‘very upset’ with what Kimmich has just done.

“Joshua Kimmich’s personality will also be interesting,” says the reporter.

Further cooperation beyond the contract until 2025 currently seems difficult to imagine.”

As we’ve seen over a long numbers of years, signing players approaching 30-years-old is not the way the Liverpool owners usually like to do things.

FSG usually prefer to bring in much younger players on lower wages, who can then grow and develop within the club.

However, the deal to sign Thiago Alcantara – ironically also from Bayern – was a sign that for the right player, they will break their mould.

While Kimmich is not as big a star as Thiago, the Germany international could be equally important for Liverpool as a deep-lying midfielder.

Kimmich would add real quality into a midfield that is just missing the final piece.

Reportedly available for £25m – and perhaps even less given Bayern’s frustrations – Liverpool should take this one-time chance at buying a world-class player.
