Virgil van Dijk reportedly apologised to Paris Saint-Germain sporting director Luis Campos after Liverpool's Champions League defeat at Anfield on Tuesday night.

The Reds' captain was spotted talking to Campos and the Ligue 1 side's chairman, Nasser Al-Khelafi, after two penalty saves from Gianluigi Donnarumma helped PSG knock Liverpool out at the last-16 stage of the Champions League.

But despite Liverpool suffering just a fifth defeat of a remarkable campaign at Anfield, it was the sight of the Dutchman, who has less than four months remaining on his current deal with the club, in conversation with Campos and Al-Khelafi that was one of the hottest topics of conversation on Tuesday night.

However, the French publication RMC has claimed that the possibility of Van Dijk being available for a free transfer was not the subject of discussion in the "impromptu chat" between the Liverpool captain, Campos and Al-Khelafi.

Instead, it is reported that Van Dijk was initially speaking to the PSG chairman, with whom he has a "strong" relationship, before Campos joined the conversation.

RMC claim that Van Dijk apologised to Campos for comments he made after Liverpool's 1-0 win at the Parc des Princes last week.

The 33-year-old Dutchman poked fun at Campos' frustrations not to send Ibrahima Konate was not sent off in first-half of the tie after a coming together with Bradley Barcola, saying: "It's not Ligue 1, bro."
