Trent Alexander-Arnold and his contract situation at Liverpool is the only outstanding uncertainty left after Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah extended their terms at Anfield.

The club have reportedly been clear they want to keep Alexander-Arnold at Anfield for the long term, reportedly offering a significant pay rise and improved terms.

However, as of late April, there has been no breakthrough in talks, and the player has remained tight-lipped about his intentions.

After his recent match-winning performance against Leicester City, Alexander-Arnold told reporters, “I’m not going to speak about my contract situation.

My focus is on helping the team finish the season strongly.”

As a result, Liverpool’s summer rebuild has grown more complex, with the need for a first-choice right-back, left-back, and forward reinforcements becoming urgent.

The lack of a transfer fee for Alexander-Arnold further strains resources, compounding the challenge of replacing a player who redefined the full-back role with 85 assists in 289 appearances.

But now speaking to reporters after the game on Sunday, Virgil van Dijk has revealed a key detail: that he and the rest of the Liverpool players don’t even know where Alexander-Arnold will be next season as we tick into May.

It certainly feels like a big indication that the 26-year-old is leaving, with the Reds skipper saying:

“Since I’ve joined the club, he has been a fantastic, fantastic player and there’s a lot of good things that he will always be remembered for if he decides to leave.

But, listen, at this point we don’t know as a group what’s going to happen.”

“There’s a lot of noise around him and obviously everyone can argue if it’s his own fault, it’s just part of life nowadays.”

“So when he scores a big goal like that, he deserves applause for stepping up in that particular moment and to soak it all in because whether he stays or leaves, these are moments you shouldn’t take for granted to give us as a team the opportunity on Sunday to finish it off?

He deserved that moment.”

Real Madrid aim to register Alexander-Arnold for the Club World Cup, which begins on June 15—two weeks before his Liverpool contract officially ends.

FIFA rules permit a special transfer window (June 1–10) for participating clubs, but Liverpool would need to agree to an early release, a prospect deemed unlikely given the lack of communication between the clubs thus far.
