Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has emphatically dismissed the idea that this season will conclude with a "bitter taste" for the team, despite their recent exit from two cup competitions.
The Reds continue to dominate in the Premier League, but their dreams of securing a treble evaporated last month.
A defeat at Anfield at the hands of PSG ousted them from Champions League contention, followed rapidly by a loss to Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final, despite being favourites to win.
These blows have left Arne Slot with his sights set on the league title alone, which Liverpool remain strong favourites to clinch.
Ex-Liverpool striker Michael Owen pointed out the frustration surrounding the recent results, suggesting they might sour the season.
Speaking on Premier League Productions, Owen said: "It's been a frustrating couple of weeks.
Liverpool were poised to have a phenomenal season, if they win the Premier League it'll still be fantastic but with a little bit of a bitter taste because it was building into something special."
When Owen questioned if the crushing defeats had somewhat tarnished their season, Van Dijk voiced his objections to such a claim.
He immediately replied: "So you're suggesting the season is not going to be special any more?" Owen clarified his view: "It will be, absolutely, it will be special, but I thought it could've been building into something very special."
The Liverpool defender then highlighted that their efforts have been underestimated: "Well, I think we have to change that narrative a little bit," he stated.
We're fighting for the biggest prize of the season, we worked so hard for it, 20 teams are working so hard to be on top of the Premier League.
Like I said, it's still looking very special in my eyes.
"I think what you said, at the start of the season, I think no one expected us to even try to fight on all four fronts, obviously we're at the stage now where we're still fighting for the biggest, and that's the reality.
