Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has issued a stern reminder after their 3-2 defeat at Fulham on Sunday.

The Dutchman has vowed that there is "still a lot of work to do" after the Reds suffered their first away league defeat of the season.

Arne Slot's side gifted the Cottagers three first-half goals despite taking the lead through Alexis Mac Allister's wonder-strike.

Sunday's defeat for Liverpool meant that they failed to capitalise on Arsenal's slip-up against Everton, after the Gunners were held to a 1-1 draw across Stanley Park at Goodison Park, keeping their cushion at the top of the Premier League at 11 points.

Van Dijk was blunt in his post-match assessment on social media and taking to his Instagram, he wrote: "A lot of work still to do, as we all saw.

"Thanks to all of you travelling [red heart emoji].

"On to Sunday."

Three goals in 14 minutes from Ryan Sessegnon, Alex Iwobi and Rodrigo Muniz turned the encounter on its head and in favour of the hosts, leaving an uphill task for the Reds.

Luis Diaz was an inspired substitution, reducing the arrears with 18 minutes to play, while Harvey Elliott crashed a left-footed strike off the bar.

Liverpool are back at Anfield on Sunday as they welcome West Ham United (2pm kick-off).

Their lead at the summit could be reduced to eight points, should Mikel Arteta's side overcome Brentford at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday (5.30pm kick-off).

"No, there's no reason for us to be complacent," Slot said.

"We're not No.1 in the league because we win every game by a margin of three or four goals.

It takes us so much effort, so much hard work combined with quality for us to win games.

"The team that won the league for the past four seasons was already 3-0 at half time in almost every game they played.

I can see it now that everyone looks back and says: ‘wow, that first half was a disaster.’

“But if you look back, you will see some good moments as well because there were some good moments as well.

“Even at 1-1, I looked and thought: ‘OK, it’s not our best game but we’re on control.’ But then all of a sudden I blinked my eyes and we were 3-1 down."
