Virgil van Dijk described Wednesday's game as Everton's "cup final" in a brutal dig to Liverpool's Merseyside rival.

Liverpool was held to a 2-2 draw at Goodison Park after James Tarkowski scored a last-minute equalizer for the Toffees.

Everton had taken the lead in the 11th minute through Beto before Alexis Mac Allister and Mohamed Salah turned the game on its head.

A huge brawl took place following the fulltime whistle after Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucoure started celebrating in front of Liverpool's fans.

Wednesday's game was the final Merseyside Derby to take place at Goodison Park, as Everton will move to a new stadium on Bramley-Moore Dock ahead of next season.

Van Dijk made his cheeky dig at Everton while speaking to TNT Sports after the game.

"Intense, it was always going to be intense," he said when asked to sum up the game.

Obviously it's very disappointing to lose it in the last second of the game - or even over extratime - but it is what it is.

It's not easy to accept it, especially in the manner how, but we take it, and we go on.

"I think the referee had a big part in the game today in terms of certain challenges were given as fouls and similar weren't.
