Virgil van Dijk has revealed what he hopes will happen to Federico Chiesa before the season ends amid uncertainty around his future.

The 2024/25 season has been one of disappointment for Chiesa, whose modest £12.5 million move from Juventus last summer came with so much expectation.

His signing appeared to be another transfer masterstroke by the Merseyside club, with the Euro 2020 champion arriving with significant pedigree and experience.

However, as the 2024/25 season approaches its conclusion, Chiesa’s Liverpool career has stalled dramatically, leading to mounting speculation about an imminent departure.

The Italian international has started only three games for Liverpool this season, with 12 appearances in total.

The 27-year-old’s first full 90 minutes in a Liverpool shirt didn’t come until late January 2025, nearly five months after his arrival, when he featured in a Champions League match against PSV Eindhoven.

As a result, speculation about his future has been endless.

There have been consistent links back to Serie A, with the likes of Lazio and Napoli frequently mentioned.

The most recent report from Italy revealed that AS Roma and Claudio Ranieri are keen on signing Chiesa in the summer window, while three Premier League clubs have also been named as interested parties.

However, amid the speculation about his future, the player himself has decided to remain at the club and is keen on ensuring his time at Anfield extends beyond this summer.

However, Van Dijk’s latest comments on Chiesa suggest that the player will be in the shop window this summer.

Speaking about his teammate, Van Dijk revealed that while Cheisa has been a good addition, the Italian’s struggles with injuries have reduced his impact, leading to possible uncertainties about his future.

“He’s been a very good addition to the team as well in my opinion,” Van Dijk told Liverpool Echo.

“Unfortunately, a bit unlucky with injuries.

So let’s see what this summer brings, but first, we hopefully have a good ending to the season.”
