Wataru Endo dropped a hint on how he is feeling about his Liverpool future following the 2-1 win over Wolves on Sunday.
The Japanese midfielder came off the bench in the 70th minute and delivered a composed and impactful performance that helped Liverpool hold on to their lead and maintain their seven-point advantage at the top of the Premier League.
Endo replaced Luis Díaz with 20 minutes left on the clock, as Liverpool looked to steady the ship following Matheus Cunha’s goal.
In his short time on the pitch, Endo won three out of five ground duels, completed 100% of his passes, and drew two crucial fouls to relieve pressure on Liverpool’s defense.
His ability to break up play and slow down Wolves’ momentum was widely praised by fans and pundits alike, with many describing his performance as “warrior-like.”
What did Wataru Endo say after the game?
Speaking to LFCTV after the game, the 32-year-old explained how he still feels that he can ‘do something’ for the club despite not seeing as many minutes as he did last season:
“I don’t mind which position I play because I used to play as a defender as well,” he began.
“I always say the thing I can do is show myself every time I have a chance and keep working hard.”
“I’m so happy to be a part of this club and I still feel like I can do something for this club.”
The Japan skipper also revealed that his main task given by Arne Slot was to mark Cunha – which he did admirably:
“After I came in the thing I have to do is not concede and keep it 2-1,” Endo said.
“So, I think I did my job?
Their number 10 is a good player, so I had to take him man v man and defensively I have to go everywhere, recover all over the pitch.”
Endo’s performance earned him the Carlsberg Player of the Match award, his third such honor this season.
While Ryan Gravenberch remains Liverpool’s first-choice holding midfielder, there is growing recognition of Endo’s unique qualities.
His ability to close out games effectively could see him play an increasingly important role as Liverpool push for their first Premier League title under Slot.
