Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been handed a two-match touchline suspension and a £70,000 fine by the Football Association (FA) after admitting to charges of using “insulting and/or abusive language” toward match officials following the contentious Merseyside derby against Everton.
The disciplinary action, confirmed on February 26, 2025, stems from Slot’s dismissal in the aftermath of Liverpool’s 2-2 draw at Goodison Park, where referee Michael Oliver issued the Dutchman a red card post-match
With Slot and Hulshoff banned, assistant coach John Heitinga will lead from the bench against Newcastle United on Wednesday evening and Southampton on 8 March.
The suspensions are hardly ideal for the Reds, who remain locked in competition for Arsenal and face PSG in Europe.
Slot’s absence marks his second suspension this season, having previously missed a Carabao Cup quarter-final due to accumulated yellow cards.
While the Dutchman won’t be on the touchline vs Newcastle or Southampton, he can still influence proceedings.
According to FA Guidelines, Arne Slot is still capable of more than a few things on a matchday:
Can Do
– Communicate with bench via phone or runner
– Be in changing room before game and at half-time
– Do post-match media duties
– Be on touchline for Champions League last-16 first-leg vs PSG (March 5)
– Be on touchline during game (including warm-ups)
– Be on touchline for Southampton game (March 8)
Club Penalties
Liverpool: Fined £50,000 for failing to control players and staff post-match.
Everton: Fined £65,000 for similar breaches
An excerpt from the official FA statement on the matter read:
“An independent Regulatory Commission has sanctioned Everton, Liverpool, Arne Slot and Sipke Hulshoff in relation to the Premier League fixture between the clubs on Wednesday 12 February.”
“It was alleged that the Liverpool head coach acted in an improper manner and/or used insulting and/or abusive words and/or behaviour towards both the match referee and an assistant referee after the match had finished.”
“Arne Slot admitted the charge, and the Regulatory Commission imposed a two-match touchline suspension and £70,000 fine.”
“The Regulatory Commission’s written reasons for these sanctions will be published in due course.”
