The January transfer window is now just around the corner, with the rumour mill already in overdrive regarding the future of Trent Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid interest.

Despite Liverpool’s remarkable form under Arne Slot, sitting atop both the Premier League and Champions League tables, the January transfer window presents an intriguing opportunity for strategic reinforcement – if the club feels that bolstering is needed of course,

Defensive midfield and left-back have emerged as positions where additional depth could prove crucial for the season’s demanding second half – although Wataru Endo’s spirited showing in the hammering of West Ham eases a lot of concern in that regard.

Liverpool’s approach appears measured and opportunistic rather than rushed.

Richard Hughes and the recruitment team will maintain their pragmatic stance, only moving for targets if the right opportunity presents itself evidenced by the acquisition of Federico Chiesa in the summer.

But according to the latest reports and Arne Slot himself, it seems Liverpool fans should not hold their breath for new faces at the AXA this winter window.

What did Arne Slot say about the January transfer window?

Firstly, according to the Daily Mail’s Lewis Steele, the Anfield club will ‘hold their nerve’ this January and will more likely use the month to lay the groundwork for summer acquisitions.

Answering if Liverpool has money to spend, Steele adds:

“Yes they do, but Liverpool will not spend for the sake of it?

They were not flustered by outside noise in the summer when they made just one signing, and will not change tack here.”

“The Reds will act if an opportunity presents itself this month – and it would be interesting if Zubimendi was to U-turn on his decision to stay in the Basque Country.”

“But don’t get your hopes up for much movement.”

Arne Slot has sung a similar tune regarding possible acquisitions, saying at the start of December:

“We are having discussions every day, no matter if there is a window coming up or not.”

“We always talk about the team, which players we like, which players are maybe not in the best place – fortunately we talk more about the ones who do well, because almost all of them do really well.”

The Dutchman added:

“I said many times at the beginning of the season, I’m so, so happy with the squad we have.”

“That’s not to say that if there will be a chance in the market [we won’t sign anyone].

“This club has always shown that they are going for it.”
