It seems the situation regarding Darwin Nunez and Saudi Arabia has taken another twist this week.
In January, Al-Hilal, one of Saudi Arabia’s top football clubs, expressed strong interest in acquiring Darwin Nunez.
The club was prepared to offer Nunez a highly lucrative contract worth £20.8 million annually, significantly surpassing his current earnings at Liverpool.
This interest was reinforced by a reported £70 million bid, which Liverpool ultimately rejected.
Then, this week, Fabrizio Romano revealed that Al-Nassr had also made two formal bids for Nunez during the same period.
Romano detailed that there were more than three rounds of direct negotiations between Nunez and Al-Nassr, indicating a serious pursuit by the Saudi club.
However, Liverpool ultimately decided against sanctioning that deal too, citing concerns about finding an adequate replacement during the January window.
And now it’s been revealed how Arne Slot has been handling Darwin Nunez since the start of the season
Arne Slot specially coaching Drwin Nunez
Reliable Liverpool reporter Lewis Steele has revealed that the Dutchman has not given up on his No.9, and has been spending additional time on the training ground with the 25-year-old:
“Slot has dedicated a significant amount of time with Nunez on the training ground,” the reporter wrote in his Liverpool Confidential.
“There is a belief that the striker could improve but also Slot has made adjustments as he seeks out a tactical way of making his No 9 more involved.”
“Although the feeling externally is that Nunez is struggling at Anfield, this is certainly not a view held inside the building and Liverpool continues to strive to get the best out of the man they signed from Benfica for an initial £63m fee in 2022.”
Liverpool’s decision to retain Nunez was influenced by their competitive position in the Premier League and other competitions.
Without a suitable replacement available, the club chose not to risk weakening their squad mid-season.
Despite Nunez’s struggles to justify his transfer fee, his presence proved important after he won Liverpool the game away to Brentford.
Should Liverpool end up winning the Premier League by three points, for example, his late brace against the Bees will be fondly remembered.
It’s not the first time the 25-year-old has won games on his own, having scored late winners at Newcastle and Nottingham Forest last season.
