Everton goalkeeper has revealed what his teammate James Tarkowski did after his leg-breaking tackle on Alexis Mac Allister during Wednesday’s Merseyside Derby game.
Liverpool secured their 100th derby win on Wednesday with Diogo Jota’s second-half goal making the difference in the game.
The win kept Liverpool 12 points ahead of the rest and extended their unbeaten run in the league to 26 games (W20, D6).
Conversely, Jota’s goal ended Everton’s nine-game unbeaten run.
Meanwhile, while Liverpool’s win was ultimately straightforward, the game was not bereft of drama and controversy.
James Tarkowski, Everton’s hero in the reverse fixture, was lucky to play the full 90 minutes on Tuesday.
The defender was keen to leave yet another mark on the contest but this time around, he left his mark inside 10 minutes, only on Alexis Mac Allister, who was on the receiving end of a calf-high challenge that was incredibly only punished with a yellow card despite being reviewed by VAR – winning the ball was seemingly his only saving grace.
Speaking about the challenge, Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford revealed that his teammate apologised for his tackle on Mac Allister after the game.
Speaking to Sky Sports on the James Tarkowski VAR decision, Pickford said: “You’ve seen at the end he apologised, it’s probably a bit of a high foot but he’s done what he’s done and he’s apologised after the game.
“The VAR says it’s not a red card, so that’s the decision?
It’s a game of football as well.”
