James Tarkowski was seen apologising to Alexis Mac Allister after Liverpool’s 1-0 victory over Everton on Wednesday night.

Diogo Jota’s second half strike earned victory for the Reds as they restored their 12-point lead over Arsenal at the top of the Premier League table.

One of the main talking points in the latest Merseyside derby though came in the first half after Tarkowski was booked by referee Samuel Barrott for a nasty challenge on Mac Allister.

The Everton centre-back initially made contact with the ball, but followed through on the Argentine, catching him in the calf with a high follow-through.

Paul Tierney was on VAR duty but did not intervene after looking at the incident, with Tarkowski remaining on a yellow card as a result.

Following the final whistle, Tarkowski was seen approaching Mac Allister on the pitch as he offered his apologies for the tackle.

The pair shook hands and embraced before the centre-half offered an apologetic explanation, insisting he didn’t mean the follow-through.

Mac Allister appeared to respond by accepting the apology and saying, ‘Yeah, it’s alright’.

A Premier League statement put out on X (formerly Twitter) read: "The referee’s call of yellow card for a reckless foul by Tarkowski was checked by the VAR, with contact on the follow through after Tarkowski had played the ball deemed to be reckless."

Meanwhile, Jordan Pickford also approached Darwin Nunez after the final whistle.

The pair embraced, with the Everton goalkeeper appearing to offer his own apologies after taking out the Liverpool forward late on in proceedings.
