The January transfer window has closed without Liverpool making any new signings, a move that has left some sections of the Reds’ fanbase feeling frustrated.

Despite the lack of activity, the club did manage to avoid any major departures, with players like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Darwin Núñez staying put despite interest from Real Madrid and Saudi Arabia, respectively.

Liverpool’s decision to stick with their existing squad was not unexpected, given their strong position in the Premier League and progress in other competitions.

Manager Arne Slot has expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting that there was no immediate need for reinforcements during the winter window.

The club’s strategy was to remain opportunistic, but no suitable deals materialized

While Liverpool avoided major exits, the future of goalkeeper Alisson Becker is also bubbling in the background.

Last summer, Alisson rejected lucrative offers from the Saudi Pro League, citing his happiness at Liverpool and a desire to honor his contract.

Speaking last year, the Brazilian said:

“I have a three-year contract with Liverpool.

I don’t think the future is definitive for anyone, but in football, I hope to fulfill my contract here in England and, then, after that… I’m open (to returning) to Internacional [boyhood club in Brazil.”

However, the club’s move to secure Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, albeit with the Georgian goalkeeper remaining on loan at Valencia for now, suggests that Liverpool is planning for the future.

What did Liverpool insiders say about Alisson Becker?

Athletic journalist James Pearce, speaking on the Walk On podcast, has explained his slant on Alisson’s situation at the club and believes that the Brazilian will stay at least until the end of his contract that expires in 2027:

“Alisson came out and said that it wasn’t his plan [to leave] and he still intended to see out the contract that he’s got, which is effectively two years this summer,” Pearce said.

“I think one of the years is an option, but effectively two years.”

“Liverpool’s stance is that signing Giorgi Mamardashvili was about succession planning?

I’ve also been told that they know Alisson has had a lot of interest from the Saudi Pro League in the past couple of years.”

But the Athletic reporter maintains that the 32-year-old rejected all offers and believes Alisson is set to remain at Liverpool for the foreseeable future:

“Each time he’s said no,” the journalist explained.

“But of course you don’t know whether there will be an offer that comes further down the line which is just too good to say no to, especially for someone who will be 33 later on this year.

“I’ve certainly got no reason to believe that Alisson is preparing to say goodbye.”

Alisson has not been at his glittering best since returning form a small injury in December.

However, at just 32 years of age it’s fair to say that the Liverpool man still has plenty to give in the coming years.
