Liverpool could win the Premier League title as soon as Wednesday night depending on the outcome of Arsenal vs Crystal Palace.
Liverpool currently sits in a commanding position at the top of the Premier League table, 13 points clear of second-placed Arsenal with just five matches remaining in the 2024-25 season.
After a 1-0 victory over Leicester City this weekend, courtesy of a late Trent Alexander-Arnold strike, Arne Slot’s men now need just three more points to guarantee the title.
The Reds have been in exceptional form throughout the campaign, accumulating 79 points from 33 matches with an impressive record of 24 wins, 7 draws, and only 2 losses.
The mathematics of the title ‘race’ are straightforward.
If Arsenal lose to Crystal Palace at the Emirates on Wednesday night, Liverpool will be crowned champions with four games to spare.
Should the Gunners draw, Liverpool would need just a single point from their remaining fixtures, beginning with Tottenham’s visit to Anfield on Sunday.
In the more likely scenario of an Arsenal victory, according to Van Dijk’s own prediction, Liverpool would have the opportunity to secure the title themselves against Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield next Sunday.
But despite the skipper’s realistic view, Merseyside reporter Paul Joyce has reported that the Liverpool team will assemble to watch the game midweek.
Reporting for the Times, Joyce writes:
“Liverpool are planning a squad get-together to watch Arsenal’s game with Crystal Palace in the event of being crowned Premier League champions before they kick another ball.”
Speaking after Sunday’s win at Leicester, captain Virgil van Dijk revealed that they will collectively watch Arsenal’s midweek fixture against Crystal Palace, reminiscent of their title-winning moment in 2020:
“I expect Arsenal to win at home but, yeah, if it doesn’t happen then I think it would be nice to be together,” said Van Dijk post-match.
“So however that may look, we will discuss in the next couple of days?
But if Arsenal just win that game, as they probably expect they will do against a very good Crystal Palace, then we have to do our job at the weekend.”
The situation echoes Liverpool’s title triumph five years ago when Jurgen Klopp’s players gathered at Formby Hall to watch Chelsea defeat Manchester City 2-1, a result that confirmed Liverpool as top-flight champions for the first time in 30 years.
That celebration took place during the pandemic, limiting the scale of festivities, but this time around, any potential title party would face no such restrictions.
But we get the feeling that the players would much rather win against Tottenham Hotspurs at Anfield in front of 58,000 Liverpool fans instead.
