Mikel Arteta has spoken honestly on how he viewed the January transfer window.

Arsenal’s stunning 5-1 victory over Manchester City has cemented their status as Liverpool’s primary title challengers.

The Gunners’ impressive performance, highlighted by goals from Myles Lewis-Skelly and Ethan Nwaneri, has not only narrowed the gap with Liverpool to six points but also sent a strong message about their intent to claim the Premier League crown.

However, the North London outfit is struggling with some injuries to key players, especially in the forward ranks.

Bukayo Saka remains sidelined with a hamstring injury.

The Brazilian’s season is effectively over, and he faces a long rehabilitation process, with hopes of returning by the start of next season.

Therefore, there was plenty of noise about the Gunners bringing in mid-season reinforcements, but that did not materialize.

Now Mikel Arteta has reflected on his club’s January window.

What did Mikel Arteta say about the January transfer window?

Speaking at his pre-Newcastle United press conference, Mikel Arteta revealed that he is ‘disappointed’ to an extent that his side were not able to bring in reinforcements, but stressed that only certain kinds of players would fit in with what he wanted at the Emirates:

“We had a clear intention which is always there is a window open to explore the opportunities to improve our squad with players that can impact it,” Arteta said as quoted by the Guardian.

“We haven’t achieved it so we are disappointed in that sense but as well we are very aware that we only want to bring certain kinds of players and we have to be very disciplined with that and I think we will.”

When probed if the lack of transfer activity is a gamble with the Reds looking so dominant in the Premier League, Arteta replied:

“It’s not a gamble, it’s reality.

So we’re going to have to evolve there as well and have more and have more players from the academy and the ones that are here to be fitter longer.

Furthermore, the Spaniard also admitted that his side would now have to be ‘flexible’ regarding the make-up of their front three players for the foreseeable future

“That’s a job that is permanent and it keeps evolving and we need to be on our toes?
