Fabrizio Romano has made fresh claims about Mohamed Salah and interest from Saudi Arabia.
Salah’s future is one of the most discussed topics in the last few weeks among Liverpool fans.
Like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil van Dijk, the Egyptian’s current deal at the club ends in the next two months, and there appeared to be no positive news on renewal heading into the last two months of the season.
However, several reports that broke on Wednesday claim that Salah’s representatives and Liverpool’s hierarchy have progressed to the point where a resolution is now viewed as inevitable.
Salah’s output remains elite despite his age.
In 2024–25, he has contributed 32 goals and 22 assists in 45 appearances and, at times, has single-handedly carried the Reds to a Premier League title soon to be at Anfield.
The financial terms of the new deal have remained undisclosed; his current contract pays £18.2 million annually, making him one of the Premier League’s highest earners.
Still, despite the lucrative wage offer he is likely to get at Liverpool, it is nothing compared to what Saudi Pro League clubs were willing to offer him to come to the Middle East.
Salah is arguably the face of Arab football, and his quality and celebrity status among the Muslim community make him a player that Saudi clubs have been genuinely eager to sign.
Liverpool reportedly rejected an over £150m offer from Saudi clubs for Salah last season.
The interest remains this season, and either Al-Hilal or Al-Nassr would have been willing to double the salary Salah is being offered at Anfield.
However, despite the temptation of a hefty paycheque, Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Salah never considered going to Saudi Arabia.
Speaking in his latest edition of the Here We Go Podcast on YouTube, the journalist revealed that despite the huge offer on the table, Salah never advanced in negotiations with Saudi or European clubs.
“From Saudi Arabia, they were more than aggressive for Mohamed Salah,” Romano said.
“They were prepared to offer him crazy money.
So, from Saudi Arabia, they were prepared to attack with a very big proposal for Salah.
But Mo has been super respectful to Liverpool.
“Behind the scenes, he was never advancing in negotiations with Saudi clubs, not even with European clubs potentially interested?
And so, fo Mohamed Salah, the message was also very clear; ‘I want to stay,’ that was what he told the club.”
